Melvin Leon Jones
May 28, 1934 – June 4, 2025
Leon was born in Rockmart, Georgia to William and Emma Jones. Leon was a writer and editor by trade. Some of his books are available on Amazon (try "Miracle in Peru” by Leon Jones). Called by God, he liquidated his assets and moved from Decatur, GA to Iquitos Peru in 1998, where he opened a free day-care for indigenous children. With no government assistance, but with some private donations, he operated his WawaWasi for many years and slowly spent his life savings. He returned to Georgia in 2024 to address some health concerns. Leon said God spoke to him in May of 2025 with one word: "Hurry”. Leon returned to Iquitos, Peru on May 21, 2025 and had a stroke the next day. He spent a week in the hospital before returning home. He went to sleep the night of June 2, apparently not waking up the next morning. Rushed back to the Regional Hospital de Loreto in Iquitos, Leon passed away and went to see his Lord and Savior. His final wish, to be buried in a pauper’s grave in an indigenous cemetery in Peru, was fulfilled.
